Solving the Mystery of Planet Formation

Welcome to Ruobing Dong's Group

Our mission is to unravel how swirling disks of gas and dust transform into "other worlds" — planetary systems around stars. We combine state-of-the-art hydrodynamic and radiative-transfer simulations with the sharpest images of protoplanetary disks, captured by some of the largest telescopes on the ground and in space, to probe the physics of planet formation. Alongside these efforts, we develop machine learning surrogates that dramatically accelerate, or even replace, full-physics disk calculations. By fusing simulations, observations, and machine learning models, we strive to reveal how planets form and grow, and how their natal disks evolve over time.
